Biathlon standout Anna Gandler has opened up about the significant role music has played in her life, even as she earns her living as a professional athlete. The Austrian star highlighted two emotional milestones that stand out in her career so far.
“As a child, you try many things. At five, I decided I wanted to be like Mozart and started playing the violin. But I didn’t have great talent and was too lazy to practice. It quickly became clear that wasn’t for me. I was better off in sports,” Gandler shared in an interview with the portal “Mein Bezirk.”
Despite not pursuing music professionally, the violinist in her early years helped shape her biathlon career. “The concentration needed to block out everything else is very similar in biathlon. I sometimes miss that now, and I’m trying to play more again,” the 25-year-old explained.
In 2020, Gandler became junior world champion in the pursuit event. That same year, she made her debut in the IBU Cup, and by 2022, she had moved up to the World Cup circuit.
When asked about her most emotional moments in biathlon, Gandler recalled two instances. “The first was my junior world title — that was the first time I felt I could really achieve something. The second was a sixth-place finish in Ruhpolding. My parents were there, it was a tough season, and that result meant so much to me. Achieving that almost at home was something truly special,” she revealed.

Gandler was referring to the 2024/25 biathlon winter season. The Austrian skier missed the World Championships in Switzerland due to illness.
In the overall World Cup standings for the past season, Gandler finished 34th. Only Lisa Theresa Hauser (18th) placed higher among Austrian contenders.
