The Los Angeles Lakers suffered a 125-107 defeat at Payton Center on Thursday night, and LeBron James made it clear that the reasons were not difficult to pinpoint. Oklahoma City’s defensive pressure, turnovers, and second-chance scoring dictated the outcome, as the Thunder consistently responded every time the Lakers attempted a comeback.
James acknowledged that the Lakers had “some really good minutes up through three,” including a brief lead in the third quarter, but failed to maintain momentum when Oklahoma City turned up the intensity.
“We was able to take a five-point lead in the third quarter and then they made a run obviously,” James said. “In our fourth quarter they kept scoring.”
That decisive fourth-quarter surge came after the Thunder outscored the Lakers 32-15 in the third period, even with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander sidelined after picking up his fourth foul. James noted that the Lakers understood the challenge, but Oklahoma City still capitalized on every possession.
“They’re really good at exploiting matchups and things of that nature,” he said. “But we got a good game plan. We tried to execute close to 48 minutes. Just didn’t get it done.”
The Lakers’ primary issue remained the same one JJ Redick emphasized after the game: the Thunder’s ability to force errors. James was blunt about that aspect of the matchup.
“Them forcing turnovers is what they do better than anybody,” he said. “You guys know you have to not turn the ball over.”
James pointed out that the Lakers had chances to generate better shots, but some possessions stalled in the paint and others turned into turnovers. He stressed that not every giveaway was careless, but the margin against Oklahoma City is too slim to withstand sloppy stretches.
“I don’t know,” James said. “We’ve had opportunities. I think offensively we’ve had some really good looks. Some of them haven’t gone down in the paint. Yeah, we’ve had some turnovers. I don’t think today it was that many where it was like careless turnovers. Some of them was being aggressive and be okay with that.”
When asked about the officiating, James did not use it as
