Boo Weekley shot a bogey-free 3-under 69 on Sunday to claim his first title on the Champions Tour, cruising to a comfortable victory at the Insperity Invitational in The Woodlands, Texas.
While his final-round score didn’t match the 6-under rounds he posted in the first two days, Weekley remained flawless over 54 holes, finishing at 15-under 201 — three shots clear at The Woodlands Country Club. It marked the first win of any kind for the 51-year-old since the 2013 Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial on the PGA Tour.
“I really hadn’t even thought about how long it’s been since I won,” Weekley said. “I probably will when I get home later tonight or whenever I get back, sit down and think about it, replay everything that happened this week. You can’t soak it all in at once, understand what’s going on with the fans and your family, and how I actually played and how I can improve. It’s an awesome feeling to be a winner again, and I thank the Good Lord for giving me the talent to do this.”
The victory vaulted Weekley 16 spots to third in the Charles Schwab Cup standings.
In his final round, Weekley largely stayed even. He opened with a par, birdied the par-4 second, then rattled off 12 straight pars. He closed strong with a tap-in birdie at the par-4 15th and a long birdie at No. 17 to seize control.
“This game is hard enough as it is, and it’s hard to play a round without making a bogey — let alone three days in a row on a Champions Tour course. To me, that’s a feat,” he added. “It’s just another thing I can mark off on my scorecard at home that I’ve done for myself.”
South Africa’s Ernie Els, who started the day one stroke back, finished alone in second at 12 under after birdieing the final hole for a 1-under 71. But his chances evaporated with a double-bogey 6 on the 17th after his second shot found the water.
“On 17, I never had the right club off the tee all week,” Els said. “I tried to ease up with a 3-iron, hit it dead right, and the second shot was terrible. That ended my tournament.”
Northern Ireland’s Darren Clarke (68) and South Korea’s Charlie Wi (70) tied for third at 11 under. Charles Schwab Cup leaders Stewart Cink and Zach Johnson each shot 70 on Sunday to share fifth at 10 under.
Australia’s Rod Pampling posted the day’s best round at 6 under, climbing back to even par for the tournament.
First-round leader Ben Crane stumbled to a 79 — tied for the second-worst score on Sunday — dropping into a tie for 43rd.
